Crime Bake Future Attendees Post 2

Hi All. What a great response I had. Many of us are interested in getting to know each other better before the Crime Bake Conference. Most of the responses came from writers who have attended Crime Bake several times. Visit their websites and let them know you're going to Crime Bake or if you can't go, you're still welcome to hang out for future reference.
Hank Phillippi Ryan will be attending for her fifth year and welcomes your questions. One of my questions is what to wear? One persons idea of casual is not the same as another's.
I think we can probably find some photos of past Crime Bake Conferences and other conferences too.
Pat Remick is on the programming committee and she's working on getting a Guppie hospitality room. That sounds great. I hope it works out. She reminded us to get our Guppie Badge.
Jessie Estevai has been to Crime Bake before, but this will be her first time going as a Guppie.
Stacy Juba is another long time Crime Bake attendee and a member of the Guppies.
This will be Pauline's 6th Crime Bank and she's looking forward to getting to know the attendees better.
That leaves Cheryl and me Cher'ley who are looking forward to Crime Bake and meeting other Guppies.
I believe we chose a great first conference. I already feel welcomed. Most everyone has an active link or a copy and paste link to their websites, so read through the comments and follow the links. This is so much fun.
Post your questions and share your experiences.

  1. I'm definitely bringing a notebook to take notes on the great panels and speakers. The "L is for Librarian" panel just jumped out at me as looking really interesting to see how librarians pick their mysteries. Is everyone going to the banquet? I've never been to that before.

  2. Is that the one where Sue Grafton will be? I've signed up for that. I know you're probably very excited about being on the panel. Your story looks great.

  3. I will be there, for my third Crime Bake. I'll be volunteering, too, and wearing my Guppy badge. Please come up and say hello! It's a great conference.

As for what to wear, I saw people in jeans and people in nice skirts. I haven't been to other mystery conferences, but I have seen pictures of attendees dressed in fancy clothes for some event, and I didn't see that even at the banquet at Crime Bake. Nobody will turn you away for what you're wearing.

The banquet is fun - they always do some kind of great entertainment.

  4. You can see photos from past Crime Bakes at www.crimebake.org. For the banquet, which Sue Grafton will be attending, people tend to dress up a bit -- for me that might be black pants, nice top and my Guppy badge -- but everything else is fairly casual. I agree with Edith -- the banquet is always fun.

From the programming end, the problem this year is figuring out how to fit in all that we want to offer! I'm moderating the U is for Unconventional panel so I have a lot of reading to do, too.

If you haven't signed up for the workshops, give it some thought. They are always fabulous and of course, don't miss the free pizza party and Friday night seminars that follow!

  6. Hhhm, not sure why my first entry didn't post, but I'll try again.

This will be my 2nd Crime Bake. Last year was my first and I was blown away by how fabulous it was. It's hard waiting a full year for the next one, so glad it's almost here!

Last year I went business casual - I was pitching to agents and meeting other authors and felt it was appropriate. Will do the same this year.

Last year I drove to and from the conference each day (only live 1 hour away), but this year I'm staying at the hotel and volunteering so I can meet more people and relax and soak up the atmosphere.

It's going to be a lot of fun. :)

  7. Looking forward to meeting all of you! I've corresponded with many of you over email and through Facebook, but it will be nice to talk to you in person.

  8. Hi everyone, Edith, thanks for the info dress, I am going to the banquet. Thanks for the link Lisa. Staying at the hotel will be better tan driving back and forth, I'm sure. I agree, Stacy, it will be nice to talk to people in person. Now I'm going to follow Pat's link to the photos and also to follow Lisa's to Crime Bake on Facebook. Don't forget to check out each other's webpages and blogs.

  10. Do you need to sign up for each thing or just the master classes? I noticed that most people are wearing longer sleeves, is it chilly in the meeting rooms?

  11. Attending Crime Bake has been one of my life goals for over 10 years, since a published author returned from a conference and hailed its praises. Since we moved to RI a few weeks ago, the first thing I did after the last box was unpacked was sign up for Crime Bake!

I have attended other writing conferences, none of which have been solely dedicated to mystery, and made a lot of friends once there. However, I like the idea of "knowing" some in advance, and will be checking this blog post regularly.

I too am signed up to volunteer, but no assignment yet.

One quick question--how do I go about getting a Guppy Badge? Thanks

  13. I just sent in my registration. Actually, the letter carrier just picked it up as I typed this comment. :)

FWIW, I've heard that there are CB attendees out here who can't sign on to comment. They don't don't have a Google or Live Journal or Wordpress account. So they can't comment and chime in.

And they don't want to sign up for another account somewhere just to comment on one blog. For whatever the reason.

The only reason why I commented is because I happen to have a Google account, even though I made it before I started the process of branding myself.

I'm not being a pill for practice, just to let you know how common this issue seems to be. I've seen it with my own blog. I found out that I needed to make it as easy as possible for my readers to participate. And, even then, some readers just aren't comfortable participating.

Anyway, thank you for setting up this blog. We're getting closer and closer to Crime Bake.

  14. Hi Rhonda,
Glad to see you here and I'm looking forwards to meeting you in person.

Thanks for the info. I have a forum on my general website and I can paste the link to it. I don't think you even have to register to make it work. You have to sign in, but it doesn't keep a record.

Hopefully everyone will be able to sign in there.

    Later...
